Significance of output:

This paper describes a novel model of barium oxide depletion from the low work function inserts in hollow cathodes which, for the first time, includes the complex chemistry involved and the BaO diffusion. Since cathode lifetime is a key issue in high impulse missions for both gridded ion engines (GIEs) and Hall Effect thrusters, the significance of the approach is that it eliminates previous overestimates of BaO evaporation rates and thereby provides more reliable data. The success of the approach is evidenced by its adoption by QinetiQ for cathode lifetime predictions used on the ESA Bepi Colombo mission.
