The volume arose out of a session in the Renaissance Society of America Conference, Chicago, 2006. The publication of the book allows a wider readership access to the material, which was originally published as a special issue of the periodical Art History in 2008 (31/4). Cordelia Warr and Janis Elliott shared equally the writing of the introduction (pp. 1-15 in the book and pp 423-437 in the journal) and the editing of the volume.
