Purgatory and Piety in Brittany 1480-1720 is the first major study of the doctrine of Purgatory in the post-Medieval period, investigating the theology and the practice of post-mortem intercession from the later Middle Ages to the Enlightenment. The book, based on extensive research in European archives, draws on printed French theological and devotional pamphlets, sermons and handbooks from national and regional library collections in France and the UK. It also utilises 3000 chantry and anniversary foundation documents, wills and primary church records from archives across the province of Brittany.
