Matrix metalloproteinase genes on chromosome 11q22 and the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture
The international authors combine geneticists, cell biologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons and a Sports Physician to produce a basic science project with major clinical implications. The findings have formed the basis for a programme of work which includes a patent and its commercial development.
As an Orthopaedic Surgeon, I participated in formulating the scale of the clinical problem, advising on the extrinsic elements that affect ligament health to inform the choice of candidate genes. I scrutinised the clinical data, providing a clinical viewpoint on the genetic analysis and its implications for understanding ACL rupture causation. I contributed to drafts of the paper.
