The paper is the first to propose the use of the dual property of cell complexes to generate a 3D printable structure that provides structural strength to meshes when 3D printed. Unlike previous approaches, which require to model and replicate the connectors used within the internal structures, the proposed algorithm creates a simple and clean structure in fewer steps. A preliminary version of the paper was presented at the Computer Graphics International 2013 conference (acceptance rate of 18%), entitled ‘Dual Joints for 3D-structures: Producing Skins for Skeletons by Exploring Duality’.
