Additional information

This paper reports results of a PhD project, which was the first major study of noise and acoustics in open-plan classrooms in primary schools and their effects on speech intelligibility. The project was very timely given the introduction in the 1990s/2000s of large open spaces in many new schools. Guidelines were developed for the design and use of open-plan classrooms. These have been included in the current revision of Building Regulations on school acoustics, and accompanying guidance. The student was awarded the Institute of Acoustics Peter Barnett Student Award for her work. Verification: Richard Daniels, Department for Education. Richard.Daniels@education.gsi.gov.uk
