Additional information
This paper is the first in a series of academic papers to record the results of the EU Project HORIZON, which is the first ever empirical study of marine watch keeper fatigue in linked simulators over a period of 7 days. The paper describes the experimental design to measure the fatigue and performance levels of 30 bridge watch keepers on a 4 hours on and 8 hours off watch regime. The results highlight the numbers of participants who fell asleep on watch, the levels of sleepiness and stress, and the deterioration in performance during the week.
