Additional information

This paper presents the first systematic study of reactive extraction of jatropha for biodiesel production, and identifies optimal conditions for the process. Jatropha is of interest worldwide as a promising biofuel crop, as it is high-yielding and can grow on relatively low quality land. Reactive extraction can produce biodiesel without the need for crushing and solvent extraction. This removes the need for hexane, which makes the process greener and applicable to small-scale on-farm distributed production. This work was part of a UKIERI-funded collaboration with the Indian Institute of Petroleum (“Direct Production of Biodiesel from Non-edible Oilseeds” UKIERI SA07-0094).
