Osteoblast-like cell response to calcium phosphate coating chemistry and morphology on etched silicon surfaces
This paper details biomaterial scaffold surface engineering using physical, topographical and biochemical cues for the control of osteoblast cell behaviour on a biomaterial implant surface. A continuation of earlier work using chemical and topographical cues, this research has brought the manufacture of functional osteoblast scaffolds closer to reality and forms the basis for a patent (Application No. PCT/IB2012/053888) for a technology to develop functionalised biomaterial scaffolds for enhanced cell attachment and tissue formation. It also forms the core of our Proof of Concept proposal which recently obtained commercialisation finance (InvestNI, PoC 319, 2013).
