Funded through the EU FP6 SODISWATER project (€2.7 million INCO-DEV 031650) and in collaboration with Plataforma Solar d’Almeria - Europe’s leading solar energy research facility - this paper reports the first use of electronic sensors to automate solar disinfection reactors thereby enabling scale up from 2L to 100L per day. Final arrangements with NGOs for field trials and reactor deployment are currently under discussion. This work has led to further joint publications, has contributed to a recent US-Ireland collaborative funding award and has been presented at invited expert lectures in Brazil, USA, China & Europe in 2012/13.
