An in-vitro comparison of titania and carbon nanostructures cytotoxicity on human lung epithelial cells which has established the cytotoxicity of the latter and hence makes a significant contribution to the critical debate on safety of nanomaterials, particularly dispersed nanoparticles which can enter via the lungs. Part supported by our All-Ireland Functional Biomaterials R&D programme and RCIF nanoparticle funding, the outcomes helped secure funding for US-Ireland collaboration (tri-partite NSF, Science Foundation Ireland, DEL financed, (NSF-CBET 1300 Award 1033317) ) in collaboration with University of Cincinnati, Florida International University and Dublin Institute of Technology and FP7 SME capacities project ‘Aquapulse’ (no. 286641).
