The research, funded by Anglian Water, Severn Trent Water, Northumbrian Water and Yorkshire Water, was used to suggest sustainable, lower cost alternatives to current practice. The work resulted in a granted process patent (WIPO, WO/2010/041041) and investigation of commercial exploitation opportunities through a university spinout company (Water Innovate: A Bluewater Bio Company, richard.harnett@bluewaterbio.com).
