Additional information

Libretto by David Harsent based on a short story by Thomas Hardy. Commissioned by Music Theatre Wales and Scottish Opera. First performed by players from the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, Michael Rafferty (conductor), Edinburgh International Festival, 30 August 2012.

The compositional question underpinning In the Locked Room was how to generate drama and confrontation in the musical material that compensates for, but does not negate, the libretto, which is based on imagery rather than narrative. The work is conceived in one 45 minute span, in which the music drives the drama and expands the poetic imagery of the libretto.
