MR-3: This paper proposes a practical approach to quantum access networks, which is low-cost for end users and compatible with future quantum repeaters at the core. This work on measurement-device-independent quantum key distribution (together with that in Ma, Fung, and Razavi, Physical Review A86, 052305 (2012), which proposes practical solutions under realistic noise conditions) has been demonstrated experimentally by Professor Jian-Wei Pan’s group at the University of Science and Technology of China (Physical Review Letters 111, 130502 (2013)). It will impact on future multi-user quantum-classical optical networks, for example, those being developed by Toshiba (andrew.shields@crl.toshiba.co.uk).
