Additional information

"Interlude" is a body of work I initiated in 2011 from photographs taken over three decades, reflecting identity, diaspora and belonging. The work has been re-evaluated and put into a new and timeless context to concentrate attention on the pure image. Pastoral scenes from the 1980s and 90s are set alongside newly created images which act as a commentary on what can now only be a fading dream of the past.

The rigour of my work derives from my careful selection of photographs for e.g. the solo exhibition in the National Museum of Kosova in July 2012, of which the art critic Ian Jeffery wrote: "... she found a figure for Society". The work was also shown on national and international media. Eight of the images were blown up to billboard size and exhibited in the museum park. This highly original manner of presentation - like a sculptural installation - meant that the work could be viewed by passers-by as well as gallery goers. The work's originality also arises from its basis in my life: being both ethnically Albanian and British, and having lived in both former Yugoslavia and England, I am able to get under the skin of my subjects like a native but apply an objective eye as a foreigner. The work's significance is attested by its having been selected for an international exhibition 'Time, Place, and The Camera: Photographs at Work', held in September 2012 at the Kosova National Art Gallery. This led to articles in national newspapers, programmes for Kosova Television, and a favourable review in the international arts magazine Creative Camera, Austria.

The work is featured in the book "Kosova: A Youthful European Democracy", distributed to politicians and diplomats throughout the EU in 2013; and one of the photographs was selected by The Open Society.
