An implicit parallel multigrid computing scheme to solve coupled thermal-solute phase-field equations for dendrite evolution
This presents a major breakthrough in phase field modelling of metallic multidendrites with Lewis number of 10^4. The implicit multigrid scheme allows time-steps 3-4 orders of magnitude larger than explicit methods, increasing computing efficiency by ~4 orders of magnitude. The evolution of 20 dendrites in ~100 µm^2 domain can be simulated in <20 hours using a cluster of <100 cores. Furthermore, a fully coupled thermal-solute-convective model has been developed and recently published in the same journal (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jcp.2013.10.004), placing the UK at the forefront of this quickly advancing research field. The model was developed via a Royal Society Newton International Fellowship.
