Additional information

This article explores the generation of large-scale structural schemata in music by the juxtaposition of foreground-level memes. Taking three classical-period piano sonata first movements as case studies, it attempts to mediate between music theory and analysis, replicator theory/memetics and music psychology. More broadly, it offers a defence of a memetic interpretation of music, counterpointing it against Schenkerian conceptions.
