Plastic limit is a fundamental index parameter to describe and classify soil type from which a wider range of properties may be inferred. The current ‘thread rolling’ method is crude and has been criticised due to lack of rigorous control and repeatability. A new mechanical device was developed offering increased confidence and robustness. The device is patented (GB2443647 & WO2008/056170) and commercially manufactured by VJ Technology (www.VJTech.co.uk, CEO Nathan Vimalan: Nathan@vjtech.co.uk). The Norwegian Public Roads Administration have adopted this system for R&D (Project No. 603152 – Report No. 208 – contact: Tewodros Haile Tefera).
