The research for this 100,000 word monograph required defining a new area of scholarship within the discipline and formulating an appropriate theoretical framework. The lack of existing scholarly work on fantasy cinema necessitated an extended period of research whereby disparate methodologies were incorporated, including: narrative studies, aesthetics, cognitive theory, genre studies and philosophy. Case studies were derived from an initial survey of over 300 film texts and categories of distinction were devised from this large sample.
