Significance of output:

The total estimated market for tissue regeneration and repair is over $25 billion worldwide. Stem cells are central to emerging tissue engineering and regeneration strategies. However the problem is that large numbers of cells are required for clinical applications, while these cells cannot be grown indefinitely as they will lose their ability to form e.g. bone or cartilage. This paper represents an intensive collaboration with Medicine, applying engineering modelling approaches to design experiments and rationalise the growth behaviour of stem cell populations in order to develop more effective stem cell culture protocols.
