Scarcity: Architecture in an age of depleting resources
The co-edited book (Till with Jon Goodbun and Deljana Iossifova) explores the theory of scarcity, and makes connections to how this newly understood notion of scarcity might be applied to an understanding of the built environment and its design from both a theoretical and practice based perspective. It argues that scarcity in all its guises presents designers with a new set of challenges; it asks them to do things differently rather than simply doing the same but with less. In this, the book moves beyond the discussions around sustainability, placing architecture in a relationship with wider political, economic and ecological forces. It includes work by world-leading thinkers and designers Ezio Manzini, Erik Swyngedouw, John Thackara Jody Boehnert, Katrin Bohn and André Viljoen. The introduction, essay and edited publication are an outcome of the project ‘Scarcity and Creativity in the Built Environment’ (SCIBE). Till was project leader and London PI on the €1m EU–HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area) project, 2010-2013, with partners in Oslo, Vienna, and London (£425,000).
