Spectrally encoded fiber-based structured lighting probe for intraoperative 3D imaging
Determining the surface shape and profile of tissue in endoscopic procedures is a major challenge in the field of computer aided diagnosis and treatment of disease. This first flexible endoscopic approach allows vision techniques to be brought into minimally invasive surgery, and featured in a major review of surgical surface reconstruction techniques (MIA 2013;7:974–996). Funding was from an ERC grant to Dr Elson (242991 €1,616k), and a subsequent shared student and post-doc between DKFZ and Imperial. The instrument outperformed other technologies (work submitted to IEEE-TMI, and a keynote talk at the German Medical Image Processing Conference BVM, 2013).
