The Combination of Multiple Classifiers Using an Evidential Reasoning Approach
<22>This paper, alongside a closely-related sister paper in IEEE Trans on KDE, is the culmination of research published over several years, starting in an EU Framework study. The Dempster–Shafer theory of evidence is applied to the problem of ensemble learning. Important elements are uniquely distinguished from trivial in representing classifier decisions and more information is used for identifying class labels. Encouraging practical results for decision making when information is insufficient led to this deeper study of the theoretical scope and limitations of the novel focal element triplets and focal element quartets methods.
