Additional information

This is the first example of a whole cell, oxygenase-catalysed biotransformation in a biphasic ionic liquid-water system, and the first conclusive demonstration that ionic liquids perform better than cell-compatible conventional solvents for sequestration of toxic, polar bioprocess materials. This finding is currently being applied to develop production of polar bulk chemicals from renewable feedstocks in collaboration with Lucite (contact: graham.eastham@lucite.com).
