English abstract

A catalogue raisonné of the Osaka artist Ryûkôsai Jokei (active: 1777-1809). Yano and Gerstle surveyed the surviving works on Osaka theatre by Ryûkôsai, who established the tradition of Kabuki representation in Osaka. These works are scattered around the world. The book contains all the known theatre prints/paintings and the major illustrated books. The Yano chapter covers all the known documents on the artist and analyses the development of his style within the context of the time. Gerstle analyses the significance of Ryûkôsai’s ‘realistic’ style as an innovation that influenced Edo artists such as Sharaku and Shun’ei.
