English abstract

A catalogue raisonné of the Osaka artist Ryûkôsai Jokei (active: 1777-1809). Yano’s chapter (pp. 3-23) reassesses the artist as a key figure in the creative interaction between kabuki theatre and merchant-literati salons, by analyzing all sources related to his life and works. Her argument has stimulated discussion on cultural ‘amateurism’ unique to Japan’s largest commercial city of Osaka. Yano also provided all the catalogue entries of the prints and paintings (pp. 127-155). Gerstle and Yano, as the editors, surveyed and assembled the images from public and private collections from Japan, Europe and USA, and annotated with captions (pp. 51-124).
