Paris, Arras et la cour: les tapissiers de Philippe le Hardi et Jean sans Peur, ducs de Bourgogne
Frequently overlooked in place of the tapestries they supplied, this article focuses on the tapissiers to the Burgundian court c.1363 - 1419. Based on Burgundian household accounts it analyses the urban careers of the tapissiers alongside the goods they supplied and demonstrates that they were individuals of ambition, who established and maintained their business reputations by supplying luxury textiles to the court and by tapping into an expanding consumer market. It argues that supplying tapestry to a court was part of a risky strategy designed to maintain and pursue social and professional ambitions in both town and court.
