Additional information

This paper describes a new system for capturing a 3D environment, scene or object. The system was initially developed within the EU-funded robotics project View-Finder, but subsequently adapted to generate virtual models of sculptures. It went on to be presented at the conference 'Robotics Innovations for Cultural Heritage', Venice, December 2012. The system combines the following functionalities: data acquisition by means of laser range finder and camera; collation of data measurements; mesh construction; and further mesh processing based on discrete curvature measures. The last of these is based on a previous body of work by Alboul. The point cloud processing system developed here is be extended to achieve tactile measurement and feedback in virtual worlds in a new MoD-funded project 'The Medic of the Future: Training and Support, Simulation Environments'.
