Additional information
This paper is the first ever study of the movement of mixed liquid solvents (acetone-water) through a water-soluble polymer + clay nanocomposite film. It proves that the movement of acetone cannot take place in the absence of water and that acetone moves through the film as a hydrated molecule. It also supports the hypothesis (Hodge et al., Polymer 1996;37:1371) that dissolving crystalline regions form an ordered state intermediate between the planar zig-zag found within the crystallites and a completely amorphous arrangement. The work was funded by a MERI bursary to LM Doppers.
