Homogenization-based multiscale crack modelling: from micro-diffusive damage to macro-cracks
The paper describes a method to extend existing homogenization theories, which have been used to predict the response of heterogeneous materials, to softening materials. It was the first time that a methodology to link microscopic damage to macroscopic failure of quasi-brittle materials such as concrete, ceramic etc. was presented. It confirms the validity of the Representative Volume Element, a concept of importance in micro-mechanics, where failure is concerned. The work will be used to study the macroscopic failure behaviour of materials when varying its microstructure. The work has led to a PhD topic by Amin Karamnejad (A.Karamnejad@tudelft.nl, TU Delft).
