Additional information

This paper followed on from Evans’ plenary presentation at NORDTRIB 2008. It details novel methods for solving the transient mixed lubrication problem in gear contacts and taking those results forward to examine gear surface fatigue failure - a significant factor in micro-pitting, currently leading to a high number of wind turbine gearbox failures. These methods led to invited presentations at Industrial Seminars organised by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on Wind Turbine Micropitting (2009) and Wind Turbine Tribology (2011) in Colorado, and to continuing Cardiff’s 17 year collaboration with NASA through new US Army funding in 2013.
