Music and Solidarity: Questions of Universality, Consciousness and Connection
As editor of this interdisciplinary collection of essays and reflective practitioner accounts (series editor Olivier Urbain), I was concerned to give prominence to the North African voice emerging in many of the papers (also frequently amending the translations from the original French), and its often explicitly challenging counterpoint to a prevalent Western viewpoint. I curated links and resonances within an overall narrative that includes my solo-authored Introduction and my own chapter, ‘Musicking and Empathic Connections’. I also commissioned Christopher Small’s Prologue (his final publication) as the initial critical throwing down of the gauntlet.
