Double-weighted statement

The Matter of Air has unusually wide scope, both historically, and in terms of the diverse materials it considers. It analyses the ‘imagination of the air’ from the seventeenth century to the present, taking in scientific and medical writings, memoirs of the mad, and technical writing about gas and explosions, along with atmospheric effects in art, the history of cremation and the idea of effervescence from alchemy through to popular advertisement. It develops through these materials a complex, far-reaching argument about the affinities between modernity and the air, and the erosion of the associations between the air and the infinite.
