Double-weighted statement

This is the first book to make the case that a ‘literary historical genealogy’ can be developed for the Indian novel in English by establishing complex and determinate lines of literary, philosophical and cultural influence. Preliminary research involving archival material from the mid-nineteenth century, as well as a range of out-of-print twentieth-century texts, took two years. It is the span of the argument, from 1828 to the present day, which made it possible to establish lines of influence.
