Estimating skeletal muscle fascicle curvature from B-Mode ultrasound image sequences
<28>First description of the use of ultrasound to automatically determine the shape of muscle fascicles as they contract. This segments the muscle into different tissues and uses a particle filter to measure the fascicle orientation at different depths, learning frame-to-frame variation as the sequence progresses. The significance is demonstrated by a variety of realistic actions, on which the algorithm is capable of accurately characterising intra-movement fascicle variation, unlike other techniques, which fail to track the muscle. The impact will be on physiological models of muscle contraction, which can be accurately tested on large amounts of data.
