Nanoparticle coatings are a potential treatment for dentine hypersensitivity and this paper describes the first use of FIB-SEM for imaging treated dentinal tubules. This research has directly led GlaxoSmithKline (Dr J Earl, Principal Scientist, Consumer Healthcare jonathan.s.earl@gsk.com,) to adopt the technique to assess the effectiveness of their products and has proved to be an important tool for the development of new products into the marketplace, such as “Sensodyne Rapid Relief” and “NovaMin” (J Clinical Dentistry 21, p37, (2010) & 22, p68 (2011) citing this paper). The project provided the foundation for new research themes in photo-induced biomineralisation (Pat. Appl. PCT/GB2011/051938).
