Dr Feher is a Newton International Fellow. Newton Fellows are paid directly by the British Academy / Royal Society, and we, as the UK Host Organisation, employ the UK Sponsor, Dr Kenneth Smith, who is a co-applicant on the fellowship. Newton Fellows are hosted by the University for two years. Further information on the Newton International Fellowship programme is available from http://www.newtonfellowships.org/the-fellowships.aspx. Dr Feher’s Fellowship is designed around a joint project between Dr. Feher and Dr. Smith that explores how context biases in social learning (e.g. biases to copy majority behaviours or the behaviour of prestigious individuals) impact on the transmission and evolution of language. Dr. Smith has worked on the effects of transmission on unpredictable linguistic variation for some time, and this joint work extends his prior work in several exciting directions, while speaking to issues that are of broad relevance to the work of the Language Evolution and Computation (LEC) research group more generally. Dr. Feher is a fully-integrated member of the LEC: she has an office which she shares with another LEC post-doctoral researcher, she attends the group’s weekly lab meetings, and is involved in supervising MSc students enrolled on the Masters programme associated with the LEC.
