Additional information
This paper describes the “rediscovery”, and technical respecification, of Roman cement mortars. The work provides a route to prolonging the workable life of Roman cement mortars without recourse to potentially adverse chemicals. Further, conventional wisdom is challenged by the associated development of naturally-derived mortars for both conservation and new-build professionals. This has a clear sustainability impact - increased uptake of Roman cements reduces the embodied energy- and carbon-cost of buildings.
