Double-weighted statement

The research for "The Horrible Gift of Freedom" developed out of Wood’s interest in slavery and its representations in the last twenty years, and was funded by a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship. The work is notably interdisciplinary and draws on extensive reading of, and engagement with, historians, art historians, cultural historians, literary, black studies and Atlantic studies theorists and reparations scholars. It is based on significant archival research, and makes available a vast new archive of visual material devoted to the celebration of the gift of freedom, from Ancient Rome to the commemorative stamps produced in London in 2007.
