The process of continuous cocrystallisation by twin screw extrusion was developed at Bradford by the authors and this work led to a patent application surrounding the technology being filed by the inventors (GB0813709.3) and the award of a 3 year £495k EPSRC project (EP/J003360/1). This paper describes the application of in-process monitoring to quantify levels of cocrystallisation. Process analytical technology (PAT) is being promoted by the US Food and Drug Administration as a key technology to improve the quality of pharmaceutical products and processes. Here, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy has been applied to the continuous cocrystallisation process for the first time.
