Additional information
Beyond a certain threshold quality, energy consumption (carbon footprint) can increase nonlinearly with quality. This paper, for the first time, demonstrated (using model based techniques) that flexible operation (reflux ratio) not only enhances the quality of product but also reduces the energy consumption significantly. This work led to further research on energy savings in nonconventional batch distillation columns by Mujtaba and collaborators from Libya.
