Cocrystalization and Simultaneous Agglomeration Using Hot Melt Extrusion
Cocrystals are highly attractive to the pharmaceutical industry but limitations in production techniques have limited their uptake. A new continuous process based upon twin screw extrusion was developed at Bradford by an interdisciplinary research group formed by Dr Kelly (process engineering) and Professor Paradkar (pharmaceutical science). The initial research was supported through a Yorkshire Innovation fund, which employed a PDRA (Dr Dhumal). This project led to a patent application surrounding the technology being filed by the inventors (GB0813709.3), the award of a 3 year £495k EPSRC project (EP/J003360/1) and a recent synchrotron ESRF beam line award in Grenoble.
