Consumption and Gender in the Early Seventeenth Century Household: The World of Alice Le Strange
This book occupied the majority of Whittle’s research time during that period 2003-2010. It is densely researched, deploying a substantial quantity of unpublished historical data gleaned from previously unstudied manuscripts, analysed in detail. The book uses a systematic quantitative methodology drawing on a database constructed for this purpose, as well as analysing sources qualitatively. The topics covered book stretch across a wide range of sub-disciplines, such as the history of gender, the gentry, food, material culture, childhood, leisure, estate management, accounting, and work, and required extensive reading and research to set the findings in context.
