Additional information

This book chapter is the outcome of four years of research, user trials, and implementation of mobile learning projects (mlearning), providing an overview of the potential of the integration of mobile web 2.0 tools (based around smartphones) to facilitate social constructivist pedagogies and engage students in tertiary education. Pedagogical affordances of mobile web 2.0 tools are evaluated, and student usage and feedback is outlined via an interactive multimedia timeline illustrating how these mobile web 2.0 pedagogical affordances have transformed pedagogy and facilitated student engagement in a variety of course contexts. A rubric for evaluating appropriate smartphone choices was developed for this research, and a model for implementing mobile web 2.0 pedagogical integration was presented. This output builds on the journal article: Cochrane, T., Bateman, R., (2011) ‘Transforming Pedagogy Using Mobile Web 2.0’, in D. Parsons (ed.), Combining E-Learning and M-Learning: New Applications of Blended Educational Resources 2010 pp. 281-307, Hershey, PA, USA: IGI Global; and a conference paper entitled ‘Smart Phones give you wings: Pedagogical Affordances of Mobile Web 2.0’, presented at the 26th ASCILITE conference 2009 at the University of Auckland where it was awarded an Outstanding Paper Award.

This research is widely disseminated through conference papers and journals. These include a published paper of the same name at IADIS 2009 in Barcelona, a journal article Cochrane, T., Flitta, I., Bateman, R. ( 2009) Facilitating Social Constructivist learning Environments for Product Design Students Using Social Software and Wireless Mobile Devices, DESIGN Principals and Practices Journal 3(1), 67-88, and a journal article Cochrane, T., Bateman, R., (2009) Transforming pedagogy using mobile web 2.0., International Journal of Mobile and Blended Learning, 1(4), 56-83. doi: 10.4018/jmbl.2009090804
