Yoxall has an established track record in numerical modelling, both in industry and on research projects including (Yoxall, A. et. al. (2009) 'Load-path-based modelling strategies for synovial joints', Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 223 (9), 2143-2153). Yoxall provided heart valve models that he had previously built for other projects, and employed his hands-on expertise in developing highly complex mathematical models. These mathematical techniques were initially used on packaging and food waste as described in Langley, J, & Yoxall, A. et al (2009) 'The use of uncertainty analysis for the design of container closures', Packaging Technology and Science, 19 (3), 139-147.

Yoxall expedited the addition of non-linear material modelling and structural changes to the model, including the addition of more complex structure and fluid-solid interaction between structure and blood flow. Yoxall also provided advice on the development of model outputs so that the results would be useful to the wider biomechanics community. This work involved an array of engineers and mathematicians in developing the interfaces and statistical analysis needed. The future intention of this work is to hone and develop these techniques further and to produce a methodology that enables fully optimised solutions to a range complex design problems across a range of scenarios.
