Additional information

Introduced is a novel idea for thermally shielding leading edges of 1st stage vanes in an HP turbine. The concept proposes to combine the combustor-wall trailing-edge with the downstream vane leading- edge thereby eliminating the existence and hence need for cooling the vane leading-edge on alternate vanes. Although it introduces major changes to the design of related components, in a typical arrangement this strategy could save up to 20% of the total coolant spent. The proposal, based on numerical studies, is in the process of being patented by, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries LTD. Contact: Dr.Eng. Sumiu Uchida, Tel: +81-79-445-6710, E-mail: sumiu_uchida@mhi.co.jp
