A Magneto-Optic Route toward the In Vivo Diagnosis of Malaria: Preliminary Results and Preclinical Trial Data
This paper creates a whole new medical diagnostic technology by validating the lead authors “blue sky” conjecture that diseases modifying the bio-chemistry of physiological systems dependent on iron should be detectable through magneto-optic measurements. The immediate significance of the technique is recognised by the Gates Foundation which is funding (1.1M$) its development as a hand held sensor for the rapid diagnosis of malaria in remote regions. Wider application of this mechanism then offers a generic diagnostic methodology realisable as a point-of-care instrument and able to assay for several specific diseases simultaneously using a single sample.
