Additional information

Artificial Intelligence is applied for the first time to study the equilibrium planform of headland-bay beaches, i.e., beaches in the lee of a headland or coastal structure. The new AI model achieves a significantly better fit to the actual planforms than the conventional empirical models, which has clear benefits for coastal engineering projects. For instance, the model allows to predict the behaviour of a beach renourishment scheme with greater accuracy, which in turn leads to a reduction in its cost.
