Numerical investigation of turbulent supersonic axisymmetric wakes
Significance of output:
Prior to this study, no direct simulations at realistic flow conditions have studied the physical mechanisms of large structures in the near wake of axisymmetric bodies travelling at supersonic speed. Professor Dutton (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, jcdutton@illinois.edu) uses results from this and the precursor paper to devise and test new drag reduction devices in laboratory experiments. The availability of the numerical code developed for this study under RAEng/EPSRC fellowship (EP/E504035/1) has led to subsequent funding from industry (GE Global Research) and EPSRC (EP/I003754/1).Journal of Fluid Mechanics vol. 702 features an image from the article on the front cover.
