A seakeeping analysis method for an air-lifted vessel
Numerical instabilities occur when calculating the motions of high-speed vessels. For a multi-hull, these difficulties increase due to the highly oscillatory integrands and logarithmic singularities. The paper focuses on a skirtless SES, having two separate plenum air cushion demi-hulls. Improved convergence and computational efficiencies were demonstrated. Research impacts on ship stability and passenger comfort. Based on additional work from FP5 EU project EFFISES (G3RD-CT-2000-00359), results were utilised by SES Europe to improve their SES catamaran designs (http://www.seseu.com/, ulf.tudem@brygga.no). Led to subsequent publications: Vassalos et al (J Ship & Offshore Structures, 2008) and Xie et al (International Shipbuilding Progress, 2011).
